Llwyn y Brain Livestock

For Sale - Beulah Rams, Ewe Lambs, Draft Ewes and Mule Ewe Lambs

Beulah ewes have been kept here since we came to Llwyn y Brain. We joined the Beulah Sire Reference Scheme in 1996 as a founding flock and are now one of the largest individually recorded flocks of Beulahs in the UK. Beulah ewes have been kept here since we came to Llwyn y Brain. No ewes have been bought into the flock since 1981 and the whole flock has been individually recorded since 1986. We joined the Beulah Sire Reference Scheme in 1996 as a founding flock and are now one of the largest individually recorded flocks of Beulahs in the UK. The traits we are selecting for through the scheme are maternal ability, weight, muscle and low fat cover.

Nearly all of the rams we use are tested for scrapie with many rams in the most resistant R1 category. Many of our rams rank highly on the scheme and sell around 15 - 20 annually. More recently we have been breeding for parasite/worm resistance with an aim to minimise worming for ourselves and for buyers of our sheep.

The flock runs up to 1400 feet for most of the year and pre-lambing we scan consistently around 160% and with top of 178%.

Mule ewe lambs have been bred here for a number of years and the sires of this years crop are all sons of elite sires on the Bluefaced Leicester Sire Reference Scheme.

For Sale - Pedigree Limousin Bulls, Pedigree Limousin Females, Limousinx and BBx store cattle

Limousin bulls have been used here since the early 1980s with the first pedigree cow purchased in 1987. Much use of AI has been made to breed stock and sell bulls and replacement females. Jerk, Bedell Maurice and Daim have all had a big influence on the herd. Limousin bulls have been used here since the early 1980s with the first pedigree cow purchased in 1987. Much use of AI has been made to breed stock and sell bulls and replacement females. Jerk, Bedell Maurice and Daim have all had a big influence on the herd.

We have been selected for easy calving and muscling and our stock are consistantly amongst the highest prices at the Bishops Castle Quality Cattle Association May sales over the last 10 years.

The herd has been more or less closed for many years with only adoption calves bought in. Three quarters of the females are home bred. The herd is run on a commercial basis with cattle spending much of the year on the hills running up to 1400 feet.

The cattle are not force fed and we pride ourselves on the performance with new purchasers, with cows breeding to 15 years and our bulls having a long working life. Bulls are mainly sold privately.

Store cattle tend to be at least three quarter limousin or Belgian Blue cross with the Belgian Blue calves being by top AI sires. Weaned calves are wintered on silage and a sugarbeet mix.
